Jack Knox writes a local news column Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, plus a Sunday piece - Slightly Skewed - that can be categorized as either humorous social commentary or unmitigated piffle.
Since joining the Times Colonist in 1988, Jack has worked as a copy editor, city editor, editorial writer and editorial page editor. Prior to that he worked at the Campbell River Courier-Islander, Regina Leader-Post, Kamloops Daily News and Kamloops Sentinel.
An ongoing series called the Other Island, in which Jack and photographer Debra Brash explore the far reaches of Vancouver Island, earned them a Jack Webster Award nomination in 2005. Career highlights include being blasted with a faceful of blowhole spray by Luna the whale (it tasted like fish), having a near-headless body fall at his feet and interviewing a porn movie queen in the nude (her, not him).
In 2007 Jack had the honour of cycling the 1,000-kilometre Canadian Cancer Society Cops For Cancer Tour de Rock; the gruelling journey left him with a sense of accomplishment that he hopes to never feel again.
Though the facts of Emily Carr's life have been written down, her story continues to inspire creative interpretations. While I can't abide "docudramas," several cunning approaches to her work have won me over.
Jeez, a guy goes on holiday for a couple of weeks and the city falls apart.
September already. Were it not for those three sundrenched weeks in August, summer would have passed us by. I'll dream of them through the dreary months. Now, night closes in noticeably earlier each day, signalling a shifting of seasons.
